Compiled 2008 Meeting Minutes

Los Molinos Chamber Minutes(Approved)

January 9 2008

Meeting called to order at 6:40 pm

A small turnout on a rainy Wednesday did not dampen our spirits, although, we did not have a quorum and had to table some of our very cool ideas.

Those in attendance: President Betty Jo, Jan & Dwayne Elmore, Clarissa Ortner, Mike Druey & Charles Githens.

We stood to honor our Flag & Country with the pledge, routed a sign in sheet and President Betty read the minutes from our last meeting on November 28th 2007.  Since Jan had taken the last minutes, it was more like story time than minutes being read into the record. The minutes were accepted, approval pending, as we had no quorum.

Discussion on a variety of topics, including:

There will be a beer & wine bar; smaller scale than the 60th Anniversary Party-less booze.  Jan agreed to be responsible for this aspect of the function.  There’s money in the ‘bar fund’.  Still have a caterer issue and Clarissa will be calling Linda for clear info as to whether or not she’s still in business.

The items discussed that required a vote, we temporarily called ‘Suggestions’.

‘Suggestions’ made:

Our next Executive Meeting is scheduled for 01/30/08, Meeting of Members on for 02/13/08.

Meeting adjourned at 7:54 pm.

Betty asked Mike Druey to help count votes for the Volunteer of the Year and Business of the Year.  The winners were:  NuWay Market as Business of the Year, and the Volunteer of the Year is Shelley Patchen.

Betty received correspondence from Preston Dickinson, who will attend the Installation Dinner, for Senator Aanestad; Chris from Wally Herger’s office—no one will attend, so Ron Warner will present certificates from that office.  There has not been a response from Doug LaMalfa at this time.  Judge Noel Watkins will swear in the officers and directors again this year.  Barbara Ochs moved Noel Watkins have his dinner reimbursed.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Betty asked Barbara to contact caterer and give numbers for the dinner and confirm there will be hors d’ oeuvres.  Betty sent press release to Red Bluff Daily News.  Key Club girls from the high school will help serve dinner.  There was discussion about tickets for alcohol.  Barbara Ochs and Barbara Whitten will be at the door for registration.  Terry Rogers and Sharron Druey will sell tickets.  Set up will be Sunday at 1 p.m.  Herb Votaw will open the VFW Hall on Sunday for set up and 5:30 p.m. Monday evening.  Betty will have membership applications at the dinner.  To date 90 membership applications have been sent out.

CANCELLATION STAMP – Clarissa Ortner has stamp ready.  Los Molinos Postmaster says it looks good; it now must be approved by state.

LOS MOLINOS RIVER FEST – It looks like salmon fishing will be restricted, but there will still be the Miss Los Molinos Contest, luau and live music.  The Chamber will be looking for non-profits to participate with booths.  For profit is not allowed in a county park.  Mrs. Berens, a teacher at L.M. High has committed to help with contest.

There was discussion about the website.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:39 p.m.  The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 27, 2008.

LOS MOLINOS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES

February 27, 2008

President Betty Morales called the meeting to order at 6:37 p.m., followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  There were 11 members present, no guests.

Secretary Barbara Whitten read the minutes of the February 13 meeting.  The minutes were approved as read.

There was no treasurer’s report.  Betty mentioned G&G Trophies could furnish magnetic name badges for approximately $5 each.

Betty advised the need to update the signer information on the bank account at Umpqua Bank.  The present signers include former Chamber members Bonnie Landingham, Tim Nagos and Dick Ochs.  Sharron Druey moved to remove Bonnie Landingham, Tim Nagos and Dick Ochs from the bank account as signers and to add Tim Kuhns, Shari Bochert, Barbara Ochs and Betty Morales to the account as authorized signers, along with current signers Catherine Blackmore and Charles Githens, as authorized signers.  The motion was seconded and carried.  The minutes of this meeting must be furnished to the bank on letterhead for the change of signers to become effective.

Terry Rogers, Umpqua Bank manager in Los Molinos, has been promoted to manager at the Red Bluff branch.

Jan Elmore received the 4th of July Parade insurance and road department approval for use of Hwy 99E for the parade.  She will now obtain the Sheriff’s Department approval to use 99E for parade.

Treasurer Charlie Githens moved funds from the 4th of July Parade bank account be used to purchase a cell phone for his use in overseeing all parade requirements.  The motion was seconded, and after much discussion, the motion was voted on and carried.  Clarissa was asked to check on the cost of pre-paid cell phones and report her findings at the next meeting.

Walter Dodd thanked the members for honoring him at the Installation Dinner for his years of faithful service to the Los Molinos Chamber of Commerce.  He gave the legislation report, which included: deadline to file for three Board of Supervisors upcoming vacancies is March 7; Tehama County Fire Department Annual Report; February 26 designated as “Spay Day;” animal care free spay clinic March 29-31; March 11 dedication of new county administration building; supervisors should start moving into new facility in April; first board meeting April 15.  Betty asked about the appointment to the Tehama County Sanitary Landfill Agency, and Walter congratulated her for her appointment to the agency.

Betty talked about the Installation Dinner and the discrepancy in the bill from Dreams Themes and Schemes.  Since Barbara Whitten had been the contact for the verbal, agreed price of dinner, she offered to contact the caterer to adjust the bill.  It was noted the dinner was great.

Clarissa Ortner talked about the cancellation stamp and the website.  She advised J.R. Whipple is asking $50 per hour, for approximately 4-6 hours, to put the 4th of July Parade information on the site.  It was determined it is not necessary to have it professionally done.

Betty suggested the Mayor’s Race begin right after Mother’s Day instead of April 1.  The body agreed.

 LOS MOLINOS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES

March 19, 2008

President Betty Morales called the meeting to order at 6:44 p.m., followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  There were 13 members present, two guests.  Guests were Donna Wallan and Jeannie Shakeshaft from Umpqua Bank.

Secretary Barbara Whitten read the minutes of the February 27 meeting.  The minutes were approved as read.

Charlie Githens gave the treasurer’s report.  Discussion followed.  Sharron Druey moved to move $219 from the meat raffle and $227 from the installation regular raffle into the Newsletter fund.  The motion was seconded and carried.  Since that left $130 in the regular raffle and $70 in the sales tax fund, Barbara Whitten moved to move $130 from the regular raffle and $70 from the sales tax fund into the Newsletter fund also.  The motion was seconded and carried.  Clarissa moved to move $55 from the 50/50 raffle into the Newsletter fund.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Betty discussed the Installation Dinner invoice from Dreams Schemes and Themes.  Barbara had contacted Linda Daniels-Lima and negotiated the cost reduced from $1274.00 to $1158.  The difference was the chicken dinners should have been billed at $13 each.  Sharron Druey moved to accept the revised invoice as negotiated by Dream Themes and Schemes and Barbara.  The motion was seconded and carried.  The invoice also included a chamber membership for Linda Lima, which was not a problem.  Jeannie Gallagher suggested a written contract be agreed upon prior to the dinner in the future.

Jan Elmore has parade approvals up to the Sheriff’s Department.  Jan presented bills for Installation Dinner.  Herb Votaw obtained approval for the use of Mill Creek Park for the 4th of July.

The Umpqua Bank account is set up with the new authorized signers.

Walter Dodd gave the legislation report.  The March 11 dedication of the County Administration Building went well—about 100 at the ceremony.  He discussed the three supervisors who will be on the ballot for the June election.  Bob Douglas, T.C. Superintendent of Schools, is retiring June 30.  Deputy County School Superintendent Larry Champion will fill the vacancy.  Supervisors are working on the 2008 budget—the new year begins July 1.  Walter would like to have the candidates night April 24 or May 1.  Herb will check the VFW Hall availability for those nights.

Betty said she will contact Mr. Curry, the High School Principal, to invite the Civics class members to attend.  Walter will draft a letter of invitation for Betty’s signature to send to candidates.  The Woman’s Club will serve refreshments.  Walter mentioned he would also like to have voter registration available that night.

The website reflects 35 members, with a couple having paid twice.  Jan Elmore said to move her overpayment to 2009.

There was correspondence from Tiffany, who is in charge of T.C. recycling, listing upcoming recycling events.  Betty mentioned Rob’s Recycling also accepts most items.

Clarissa is still working with post office in Sacramento on the 4th of July cancellation stamp.

Charlie now has a cell phone for parade operations.  The number is (530) 200-0621.

Betty read the many upcoming events that are happening in the county.  She also advised we are a 501(c)6 nonprofit and must file a W-9.

The Woman’s Club is collecting items for the Alternatives to Violence shelter.

The next meeting is April 30.  Meeting adjourned 7:57 p.m.

Minutes for April 9th and 30th

Minutes-Meeting of Members

Wednesday April 9th 2008(Pending approval)

Our meeting came to order at 6:44 pm.  We had 5 members in attendance.  Following the Pledge of Allegiance we began our evening business.

Minutes from our previous meeting were not available but will be posted on our web site for review.

No Treasurer’s report as Charles has just been released from hospital. He is anxious to get back to work on VFW & Chamber activities.  We are all very happy to have him back.

We discussed our postal cancellation stamp project. Clarissa has been doing the work on this project and needed to have a decision regarding the artwork before we can proceed. The existing logo, in use by the VFW for many years, could not be reproduced so suggestions for alternate drawings were discussed and the hose kinks worked out.

Candidates Night, scheduled for Thursday, May 1 at 7:30 pm is going forward. Walter Dodd is the organizer of this event.  As of this meeting, of the seven candidates invited, we heard back from 4 with 3 of those 4 accepting.  We need more volunteers to help out with the chores and we need cookie donations-baked or store bought, to go with coffee on the refreshments table. We have invited the Civics class students from the high school to join us and Betty will be talking with the Civics teacher regarding their participation.  There will be a table set up with voter registration information as well as tables for each candidate to display their information.

The Mayor’s Race is coming up soon and to date, we have one official candidate-Shelly Patchen.  The money jars will be placed at the merchant’s locations right after Mother’s Day.  We discussed how to make the race livelier and more fun for all-candidates and residents of Los Molinos.  Additional candidates are needed as well as more ideas about a ‘Mayor’s Race Play Day’ with friendly competition, etc…Because the Mayor’s Race is one of the biggest fund raisers for the Chamber, we want it to be the best it can be with lots of candidates and fun for all!

We spent a few minutes on the Website.  Meeting minutes are available for your viewing pleasure.  And we will post new info to our ‘Calendar of Events’ page.  Be sure to check it out!

A ‘Parade’ update was provided by Jan.  As Charles’ back up parade permit procurer, we are just about there.  We expect to be finished with the permit part of the parade by the first of May.  Betty, taking over for Terry, will be in charge of the schedule for volunteers selling fireworks.  This is our biggest fundraiser, and we really want to encourage all to sign up for a shift in the ‘fireworks wagon’.  We have a brand new swamp cooler and this year promises to be very comfortable!

We read our mail and announcements received from other Chambers and community organizations. Many of these events will be posted on the website in our ‘Calendar of Events’ page-don’t forget to check it out!

The meeting was adjourned at 7:37 pm.

Los Molinos Chamber Meeting Minutes

Executive Meeting 04/30/08(Pending approval)

With an attendance sheet being routed around, our meeting was called to order at 6:35 pm.

We honored our Country with the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed our guest-Stephanie Stillwell.

Members in attendance:  Betty, Mike, Charles, Walter, Clarissa, Sharron, Jeannie, Mayor Herb & Jan.

Minutes from the last meeting were posted to the website but no one had a hard copy to read into the record so we deferred that reading until our next Meeting of Members on Wednesday May 14th.

Charles gave the Treasurer’s Report for the ‘Chamber’ and the ‘Independence Day Parade’.  Regarding the Independence Day account, some monies were invested in several new accounts with several different entities.  Discussion and info was shared regarding the terms and interest rates for these new investments.  Jeannie brought up the point that perhaps we need to consider adding language to the bylaws that would protect the party making such investment decisions in the event that things weren’t always positive!  The Treasurer found us a 7.9% and an 8.125% rate of return with a date of 2013; leaving plenty of operating money available for routine business!

We also discussed writing into the bylaws a rule that declares Charles cannot retire-ever! (Jesting only).

Mr. Dodd gave his Legislative Report and squared away details for ‘Candidates Night’-May 1st at the VFW Hall.  We discussed the pros and cons of voting by mail and talked about some of the proposed changes at the State level that relate to voting in general.

Our Mayor’s Race for 2008 has only 1 candidate.  There was discussion about putting other names in the hat to round out the jar displays at our merchants.  We checked our rules to confirm that only real people can run-no horses or dogs, etc…

Our Fireworks booth will be up and running for sales to begin June 28th-a statute governs first day to sell.  The fireworks are ordered and we organized a work party for the day the fireworks arrive.  They need to be secured and inventoried prior to beginning our sales.  Betty will be in charge of recruiting workers for the fireworks booth.  She needs help from Terry regarding last year’s list of helpers.  The tires are flat-again.  Charles told the story of how this condition came about; pretty good story.  That issue is under control as well.

Clarissa gave a brief report on the status of our Cancellation Stamp project.  All the info has been submitted and although we haven’t heard anything, to date, that’s probably good news.

Betty surprised us by sharing that she was working with the FAA and the United States Army regarding a jet flyover for the opener of our Parade.  That news was well received.  Nothing is for sure yet, but just that we have a maybe was well received by the members.  Most cool info there.

We discussed our choices for Grand Marshall-outgoing Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa, and our choice for VIP is Terry Rogers.   We voted to shop and obtain bids for the purchase of a video camera and associated equipment to be used for capturing the parade and making copies on disc available.  Several years ago, someone taped the parade and gave us a copy and it was so well received that we decided to begin doing that ourselves.

We talked about ‘Playday At The Park’, the games and whether to provide a concession stand.  ‘Yes’ to the sale of hamburgers and water!  A brief discussion on any improvements to the actual management of the parade itself; such items as the placement of the ‘Explorer Club’ members at the appropriate intersections.  Larry Castille usually handles that one.  The pace of the parade, the handing out of our coins and the possibility of a fund raiser by selling July 4th items along the parade route; paper fans, hats, etc….$1 items is what we have in mind.  Clarissa will look into what type of items might be available and the time to process an order!

For new business, Betty read the resignation e-mail from Joanne Landingham as our Vice President.  We agreed to not fill her position at this time and simply wait until the next election cycle to address the vacancy.  The Chamber will draft a letter to Joanne and members will be able to sign it as we say goodbye to a valued member of our organization.  Everyone wished Joanne the very best of retirement and fun days ahead for her.

The River Fest plans may be on hold as the Dept of Fish & Game may be putting the big hold on salmon season for the Sacramento River.  There’s a 96% chance that the river will be closed entirely for the 2008 season.  The decision will be announced on May 9th 2008.  In addition, the chamber did not want to interfere with the Tehama Museum’s annual Jubilee, which is held each September on the first weekend following Labor Day!

We revisited our plans to restore the ‘Miss Los Molinos’ scholarship event.  May be getting help from Erin Newton as we begin the process.  She has experience in these matters and has offered her help for our first go round.

Announcements were read and this marathon meeting was adjourned at 8:43 pm.  This too was well received by those in attendance.

Respectfully,

Jan Elmore, substitute minute taker

Los Molinos Chamber of Commerce

Meeting of Members

Meeting Minutes for 05/14/08

Our meeting began at 6:39 pm with the Pledge of Allegiance to honor our Country and the attendance sheet being signed by all:  Betty Jo, Mike & Sharron Druey, Mayor Herb, Charles sporting around on his new scooter & Jan.

No guests, no legislative report and the Treasurer’s report is scheduled for the Executive Meeting on May 28th.

We reviewed ‘Candidate’s Night’ held on Thursday May 1st.  Attendance was approximately 40-45 people.  Everyone agreed that it went well, with compliments on our refreshments.

We spent most of our time discussing the Mayor’s Race and the Independence Day Parade.

The money jars for the Mayor’s Race will be in place on May 19th.  We have one serious candidate for Mayor-Shelley Patchen of Nu Way Market.  We needed at least two more names just to round out our jar displays so Rob Morales of Rob’s Recycling and Jan Elmore of Hidden Harbor RV agreed to wage a passive campaign for spare change.

It was noted that in years past, we just have lower interest than in other years.  A work party was formed to prepare the jar displays with the names & photos and get them placed around town at our businesses.  Charles is moving slower this year so additional recruits will be needed for all aspects of the Mayor’s Race; prep & placement of jars, retrieval and the date for counting the money at Umpqua Bank has been set for Monday, June 30th.   Volunteers welcomed for all chores!

The Chamber Fireworks sales will begin at noon on June 28th and continue 9 to 6 each day through July 4th.  We need volunteers to sign up for shift work in the wagon.  Shifts are in 3 hour increments.  It’s our biggest fundraiser and we welcome all who care to help out!

Parade preparations were discussed as well.  We made arrangements to improve on the number system used to place the entrants.  Mayor Herb has this dialed.  We have a ‘cone’ squad headed up by Rob Morales and Larry will place the Explorer units.  There are a lot of chores as we must comply with Cal Trans and the CHP since we’re closing down a State Hwy.

Betty received ‘notice of eligibility’ from the US Navy for air support for our parade.  Now we need to locate a base and secure the actual flyover.  President Betty is handling this project and everyone thought her efforts are very cool indeed.  We talked about purchasing a very large flag for use in the parade and the various display techniques we might employ.

In addition, we are going to invite the City of Red Bluff Fire Dept and their ladder truck and flag for our Parade and/or ‘Play Day in the Park’.

We have adopted the position of no news is good news regarding our stamp cancellation project.  We have heard nothing from the US Postal Service.  So at this point we’re praying that all is on schedule and we’ll be able to cancel stamps as part of our Independence Day activities.

We had good news regarding the restoration of our Miss Los Molinos Scholarship Program.  Betty met with Erin Newton earlier this month and it was a very positive meeting.  Erin has agreed to walk us through our first event and assist us with the press releases, the presentation, the requirements, etc…Erin has experience in these matters and is very gracious with her time and expertise.  We are lucky to have her assistance in restoring the contest to our community!

The idea of holding an annual festival of some kind is still on the books.  We may use the Miss Los Molinos Pageant and the Luau as the anchor activities and hold an event in June of each year.  A lot more discussion to follow.

Announcements were read and we adjourned our Meeting of Members at 7:57 pm.

Respectfully,

Jan Elmore, substitute minute taker

Los Molinos Chamber

Executive Meeting Minutes

June 25, 2008

(See June 11 minutes following these)

The Chamber’s ‘Executive Meeting’ was called to order at 6:39 pm.

Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance were Jeannie & Ron Gallagher, Mike & Sharron Druey, Walter Dodd, Treasurer Charles Githens, President Betty Joe Morales and Jan Elmore.

We had no guests but we did have a quorum.

Past meeting minutes were read into the record with a correction to date & time fireworks sales are allowed to begin.  Kudos plus an “Atta Girl” was given to Jan Elmore for her willingness to pitch in on meeting minute taking for those times when Secretary Barbara is unavailable.  Ron Gallagher commented he likes the details Jan’s minutes contain as it allows him to catch up on our goings-on when work keeps him from attending.

Treasurer Charles gave his report for the Chamber and the VFW Independence Day Parade accounts and indicated that all the coins have been procured for both the parade hand outs and the ‘Play Day-in-The-Park’ activities.  There will be another press release submitted for the parade start time and the Play Day schedule of events.

Mr. Dodd gave his legislative report.  Some of our legislative information related to voter turnout in our June primary for Tehama County.  The demographics regarding ‘votes per party line’ and who won were covered.  Walter made mention of holding a ‘Candidates Night’ in late September or early October and suggested inviting all those running for positions at the local level as well as state & federal races; such as City Council-Corning, LMHS board openings and Special District candidates.

Mr. Dodd covered the highlights from the most recent Tehama County Board of Supervisors activities.  They announced the preliminary budget for 2008/09 at 126.5 million dollars with the final budget expected in September or October.  One of the budget items is raises for elected County officials and the County Supervisors.  More on that July 15th.

For ballot consideration there are 2 items worth mentioning:

1.    A Charter amendment to change back to closed district elections for each member of the Board which would be effective in 2010.

2.    Changing to the method of a Grand Jury recommendation for salary matters pertaining to the Board of Supervisors.

Discussion followed regarding the Board’s current salary and benefits package.

The Mayor’s Race received a write up in the newspaper and candidate activities were briefly covered.

Thanks to a terrific work party on June 14th, the ‘Fireworks Wagon’ is all spiffed up and ready for action.  Betty’s family members & friends really worked hard raking and cleaning, sweeping and scrubbing.  A follow-up work party on June 21st finished putting the wagon back together & getting it moved into place.  We prepared our big mobile signs that advertise our fireworks are better than the other guys!

The shipment of fireworks was inventoried and the support gear located and made ready for use. Mike Druey worked the computer keyboard and has all our parade entries lined up like little soldiers and ready to march.  Many thanks were extended to our volunteers who show up for these most important work days; without them and their efforts none of the Chamber events could take place!

Of course, the topic of conversation turned to the sale of fireworks and whether the CDF Chief will cancel all sales. The Governor asked all Californians to refrain from buying fireworks in these dry conditions as 700 fires burn throughout the state.  The Chamber decided to carry on as usual and get our ‘wagon inspection’ on Saturday the 28th, taking a ‘wait & see’ position.

Charles is expecting delivery on the 15 x 25 Flag in plenty of time for our Parade; white gloves need to be located at the VFW Hall.  Finishing touches made to the “Things-To-Do’ chores list; who is where and why.  We believe we have it covered and have dialed in the chores as best we can.  ‘All hands on deck’ if you can volunteer your time to make our 40th Anniversary Parade the best ever!

We will try again next year for a military fly over for the start of our parade and another application will be made for the Budweiser Draft Horse appearance.  Parade entries to date; about 45-50 with many more expected the last week as is typical.  All parade entries must be in the Chamber office by July 3rd at noon.  After that deadline, you still can be in the parade but will not be judged.

On the subject of the Library having to close when it gets hot, we heard from the landlord about the bids to install an air conditioner and upgrade the electrical.  We explored possible grant opportunities and discussed the information that the Los Molinos Woman’s Club may be interested in sponsoring a fund raiser as they were instrumental in getting a County Library branch for our town many years ago.

As these things go; many new bits of info has surfaced.  And the project of getting an air conditioner for the library is complicated by facts such as, the lease will run out next April.  The library has reached the point where more square feet are necessary.  The notion of relocating the library to another site in town is very much a possibility.

A community fund raiser in conjunction with grant applications is a very big deal.  It requires much effort on the part of many.  The possibility of achieving our goal and having the library move out before the ac unit would even be used would be disappointing to all concerned.  So Betty has introduced everyone to everyone who may be a player in this project and turned it over to the County Librarian, Caryn Brown, who takes it from here and we’ll see what happens.

The Postal Service will have a booth set up near the Judging Stand and Fireworks Sales Wagon on July 4th and at Play-Day-in-the-Park to cancel stamps with our special Cancellation Stamp recognizing our 40 years: A Sentimental Journey!  Thanks again to Clarissa for her efforts to make this happen!

In announcements, Betty reminds us all about the Farmers Markets around the community; Wednesday evenings in front of the Courthouse and Saturday mornings at the Red Bluff River Park.

Remember:  Chamber meetings are held on Wednesdays-second Wednesday for the ‘Meeting of Members’ and the last Wednesday for our ‘Executive Meeting’.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

SHERWOOD BLVD. AND STATE HWY 99E

                 MILL CREEK PARK

      CHAMBER OFFICE

      CHAMBER OFFICE

Our meeting adjourned at 8:04 pm with folks signing up for shifts and chores not yet spoken for.  A swell bunch of dedicated, really nice self employed people who find the time to give a little bit back to the community in an effort to help make our town always better!

Respectfully,

Jan Elmore, Substitute Minute Taker

Los Molinos Chamber of Commerce

Meeting of Members

06/11/08

Our meeting was called to order at 6:39 pm with attendance taken and the Pledge of Allegiance recited to honor our Country.  Those present were President Betty Morales, Sergeant at Arms Mike Druey, Treasurer Charlie Githens, Board Members Shelley Patchen, Clarissa Ortner, Jeannie Gallagher, and Jan Elmore on ‘meeting minutes’ duty.

We had no guests and no minutes from our last Executive Meeting.  Those minutes will be read at the next Executive Meeting on Wednesday June 25th.

Topics for our meeting centered on the Mayors Race and our Independence Day Parade activities and Chamber Fireworks sales.

The Mayor’s Race is in full swing with the ‘Candidate’s Jar Displays’ deployed throughout our business community.  The jars will be collected on Monday, June 30th and delivered to Umpqua Bank for counting at noon.

Mayor candidate Shelley Patchen announced she’s has a couple of very nice raffles as part of her fund raising activities with tickets available at Nu Way Market.  Her car wash was successful with the community showing up with some very big, very dirty trucks to be washed!  She’s also putting on a Spaghetti Dinner for June 21st at 6 pm.

Mayor candidate Rob Morales will host a BBQ & car wash near the end of June and candidate Jan Elmore continues to wage her passive campaign for spare change.

We even got word that we already have an interested party wanting to run in our 2009 Mayor’s Race-how cool is that?

Annual Chamber Fireworks Sales always begin with a work party to clean the wagon!  This event set for Saturday, June 14th-first half of the day to avoid the heat.  The main objective is to move out the spiders and just say no to dust; we’ll air up the tires and service Mr. Swampy and get it ready for operation.  Charles and his Posse will prepare the marquee with our annual advertisement to ‘support the Chamber’ and buy fireworks from us….not those other guys!  There is a lot to do to get ready for our biggest fund raiser of the year.  All volunteers welcome.  The sign up sheet is available so please contact Betty Jo to sign up for a 3 hour shift for firework sales in the wagon; it’s lots of fun!

Charles is reaching out to the Kiwanis Club by speaking at their next breakfast meeting.  The topic will be the VFW Independence Day Parade and the operations behind putting it together each year!  Perhaps they will want to participate in some parade chores! There’s plenty to go around.

The Parade-To-Do-List was made up.  We still need volunteers to help receive the shipment of fireworks from Phantom.  If interested in volunteering for any Parade and/or Playday-In-The-Park activities, please contact President Betty.

Video and still photography is still planned for the parade.  We would like to video the parade and make it available on disc.  Clarissa will be taking photos of parade entrants.

The Parade Coins are almost ready.  Charles will be talking to the bank about Kennedy and Eisenhower dollars as well as using gold coins in the event we can’t get enough of our usual ones.  Scott & Mary Liebenow will pass out the coins again this year.

The Playday-In-The-Park-To-Do-List was made up.  Again, plenty of chores to go around.  The more help the more assured we are of another very successful Playday.  The main activities are:  Games, BBQ and the Award Presentations.

Rob Morales of Robs Recycling will once again MC our event much to everyone’s pleasure!  Rumor has it he’ll be sporting a new Tuxedo this year.

In the new business and continued business categories, Jan reported that she finished the draft letter several weeks ago, thanking JoAnn Landingham for her years of service and will be sending the draft to Betty this week.  JoAnn recently resigned as Vice President of the Chamber. Jan, keeps forgetting push the ‘send’ button to get the draft letter off to Betty.

We received an update on the issue of air conditioning for the Library building.  Betty has been in contact with Tom Nagos, the building owner, via e-mail and the news was good.  Tom has already been in touch with the Librarian and has sought bids for a unit to be installed.  He indicated he’d sponsor a portion of the bill and liked the idea of community involvement and possible fund raisers to cover the balance of the tab.  Of course, until the bids are in, we have no way of knowing just what that balance may be.

We heard from Clarissa, chairman of the Stamp Cancellation Project that our Stamp came in and John at the Post Office has it now.  This is big news.  We will be honoring the 40th Anniversary of our Independence Day Parade by having the US Postal Service cancelling stamps through the Fourth of July; create a collectible!

The VFW is acquiring a very big flag to be used in future parades.  It’s a nice addition to the tradition we have and are continuing to create for our community.

There has been an offer of donation to the Chamber.  An old pick-up truck bed turned trailer.  It’ll make a nice addition to the Chamber and can be used for many things; hauling our ‘special event signs’, parade gear, equipment used for Playday-In-The-Park and such.  Jeannie G suggested that the high school shop class could make a project of fixing it up by practicing their shop skills of welding and painting!  We can then affix a  plaque that recognizes their efforts; it’s a win-win all the way around.  The Chamber agreed to accept the donation kindly offered by Mike & Sharron Druey and Becky MacFarland.

Clarissa Ortner found quite the deal while on vacation.  She donated a large quantity of Christmas Photo Greeting Cards which are ideal for our ‘Santa’s Visit’ project each year.  Thank you Clarissa for thinking about us while off having a fun time!

Before reading Announcements, Betty suggested the Chamber consider coming up with an award or scholarship which could be included in the line up of awards for the high school graduating class.  After attending the Awards Ceremony at the high school, she was thinking, like she usually is, about how the Chamber might honor a high school student whose goal is to focus on business or a trade school curriculum; more discussion later on this topic.

Announcements were read and the meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm.  Our next meeting is the Executive Meeting on Wednesday, June 25th at 6:30 pm at the Chamber office.

Respectfully,

Jan Elmore, part-time meeting minute’s taker

Los Molinos Chamber

Executive Meeting Minutes

July 30 2008

The Chamber’s ‘Executive Meeting’ was called to order at 6:35 pm.

With a full house, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance was:  Betty Joe, Barbara Ochs, Donna Wallan, Jeannie Shakeshaft, Ron & Jeannie Gallagher, Sharon Druey, Nanette Smith, Charles Githens, Mike Druey, Herb Votaw, Jan Elmore, Clarissa Ortner & Geoff Johnson.

The Chamber had guests:  Geoff Johnson from the Red Bluff Daily News, Mr. John Cooper, Melissa Tallan & Janice Horner.

Betty read the minutes from the last meeting and introduced Mr. Cooper to the members.  Mr. Cooper wanted to call to our attention an ongoing problem he has with a neighboring property and asked if there was something the Chamber might be able to do to assist him in getting the County interested in helping to clean up “the mess!”  The conversation consisted of information about the various County departments who handle the removal of abandoned cars, unsafe conditions for traffic, etc.

Charles read the Treasurers Report for the Chamber & the VFW Independence Day accounts.  In addition to the regular reports, Charles had info and questions relating to the Fireworks Sales, Parade & PlayDay.

·       The Chamber phone bill was a bit more this month due to Parade activities, so a quick review was in order.

·       We voted to buy a packet of raffle tickets from the Tehama Museum; it’s their annual Jubilee held in September.

·       The Chamber received a nice donation from Sierra Pacific Industries, a check for $500 to use for July 4th activities.

·       Still waiting on receipts from NuWay Market regarding the tab for the BBQ supplies.

·       Fireworks sales for 2008 were the 3rd biggest in 20 years!  And, sales on July 4th 2008 were the best last day sales ever, coming in at $3425.

·       Charles noticed an additional charge when returning what little unsold fireworks we had and will pursue this with the vendor by letter.

Our Legislative Report was brief and delivered by Betty Joe in Mr. Dodd’s absence.  We touched on Candidate’s Night and who will be invited.  There are many openings on various Boards and Commissions and we will be inviting all who would impact us at the local level as well as State races.

There was lively discussion regarding our Fireworks Sales.  Charles gave us a break down of how well we did each day leading up to July 4th which turns out to be our best one day sales ever.  Many of us decided that a few changes should be made for next year, should there be sales at all, given the current attitude about forest fires, and resources.

One area of concern is the issue of bagging the product before it gets rung up in the register.  A few volunteers were doing this and it’s just not good practice.  At the end when we reconcile our product sales vs. product returns, it creates more work and possible loss of revenue to the Chamber.

We discussed having chamber members serve as ‘shift managers’ and volunteers needing to comply with the policy if they wish to help out in the Fireworks Wagon.

Betty was in charge of the ‘Fireworks Shift Schedule’ and it was challenging to keep the 12-3 pm and the 3-6 pm shifts covered.  Thank you letters are going out to all those who volunteered their time!

As always, we talked about how things can be better next year.  More coordination, more volunteers with assigned chores, more members to help out!

Membership conversation followed with Clarissa Ortner asking a few questions regarding our unpaid members to date.  We discussed, made motions and voted on items that clear up questions about what to do when a member does not renew, how long to wait before dropping them from the website, whether to send reminder notices, etc…..We took the opportunity to designate Clarissa as our ‘Membership Chairman’.  That was a Betty-Smooth-Move!

Ron Gallagher had a few questions regarding when the membership year starts, and what if someone pays in September or October.

Under the category of ‘Unfinished Business’, we had talked about the idea of putting up a “Welcome to Los Molinos” sign at the south end of town.  We have an offer from a property owner to put a sign in their yard.  So, Clarissa will talk with them to see if their offer still exists and get some details.

Some new business on our agenda is the BBQ for all those who helped with the July 4th activities.  Ron & Jeannie Gallagher offered their home for the event.  We talked about having it October 18th, as it ought to be a bit cooler and less smoky by then---More discussion to follow.

Betty read announcements and we adjourned at 8:08 pm.  Those who didn’t leave soon enough and some energetic folks stayed and helped Charles get the Fireworks Wagon moved back into its parking place.  We’d like to thank Mayor Herb for his lead in steering the wagon and the others for their patience as we got it parked…just right!

Welcome Signs—Betty said members John Wills and Marsha Shebly offered to put “welcome” sign on their property.  Rob Morales suggested using a log to make the signs.  There was discussion but no action taken.

Upcoming Events—Betty reminded us of Santa Visit on December 6 and Holiday Mixer December 8.  Salvation Army bell ringers are needed at NuWay Market; Nanette volunteered to coordinate ringers, and Shelley has the signup sheet in the store as well as the bell.  Lenny is preparing a billboard for pictures for the local service men and women to be recognized.
